Greece has a long recorded history, dating back to well over 4000 years ago, which was when the Greek language started to emerge. The first primitive inhabitants were known as the Pelasgians while the first advanced civilizations were called the Cycladic Civilization and the Minoan Civilization. About 1700 B.C., Greek-speaking Indo-Europeans started to arrive in the northern parts of country and eventually invaded the entire region, absorbing the native tongue. Some of these tribes included the Achaeans, Ionians, Dorians. The arrival of these new tribes most likely led to the Dark Age of Greece. The rise of Greece's city-states happened between the years of 1200 to 800 BC and eventually saw the Golden Age of Greece, which lasted for centuries and introduced much advancement in the fields of science, architecture and literature. Greece's glory culminated with Alexander the Great, taking the northern Macedonian Kingdom and conquering the entire country, creating his own empire.

When the empire broke up, Greece was annexed by the Roman Empire, though Greek civilization continued to influence Roman culture.

This means hot and dry summers with a seven-month period of consistent sunshine. This period usually lasts from the months of April to November. The other months change, and give tourists a colder, and rainier time period, lasting from November to late March. Some of the islands are known to receive a great deal of rainfall while others are known to be very dry. If you're planning a trip to Greece then the ideal season is in the May-June time period, as well as the September-October months.

What are some of the country's greatest highlights? Athens is the capital city and an historical landmark of ancient civilization. Heraklion is the largest city and main hub, where as Olympia is of great interest to history buffs, as it is a sanctuary dedicated to Zeus and the location of the ancient Olympic Games.
